Start with passengers and cargo
Make a list of the people and items you routinely carry. Check seating position, entry and exit, rear-seat room, and the space available with seats in use. If you use child restraints or mobility equipment, check the manufacturer’s fit instructions for the exact vehicle rather than judging by body style alone.
Give the test drive a purpose
Ask staff about the permitted route and test-drive requirements. Evaluate visibility, controls, parking comfort, braking feel, and ride quality in the allowed conditions. Write down unusual sounds or behavior and ask for an explanation or an independent inspection. A short drive does not reveal every mechanical issue.
Compare running costs and safety information
Look beyond the purchase price. Research insurance and fuel estimates for the actual vehicle, confirm its equipment, and check NHTSA’s recall lookup with the VIN. A model’s reputation or rating does not certify the condition of an individual used car.
Local roots
