Use safety ratings when comparing cars

A safety rating is useful comparison information. It is one part of choosing a car, alongside condition, visibility, fit, and the equipment on the actual vehicle.

01

Look up the right model

Use NHTSA’s ratings tool for the correct year, make, and model. Review the available test categories and the tool’s guidance on which vehicles can be compared.

02

Check the equipment in person

Ask which safety features are actually installed on the vehicle you are considering. Similar-looking trims can have different equipment. Ask for a demonstration of features you have not used before.

03

Do not confuse rating with condition

A model’s rating does not certify a particular used car’s brakes, tires, repairs, or maintenance. Pair research with a test drive, recall check, and independent inspection.

Does a highly rated model guarantee this used car is safe?

No. A model rating does not establish the current condition of an individual vehicle.
