How to check a used car for safety recalls

Make a recall check part of your shopping routine—and repeat it during ownership. A new recall can be announced after a purchase.

01

Use the exact VIN

Find the 17-character VIN on the vehicle or its paperwork and enter it in NHTSA’s official recall lookup. Double-check the characters so the result refers to the right vehicle.

02

Read the result carefully

Review any listed recall and the next steps. A lookup result is not a complete vehicle history or mechanical inspection, and an absence of listed recalls is not a guarantee of condition.

03

Follow the repair instructions

Contact the manufacturer or its authorized dealer to confirm the remedy and availability. If a recall has a do-not-drive or other urgent instruction, follow that specific instruction.

Is a recall lookup the same as a vehicle inspection?

No. It checks recall information; it does not evaluate the vehicle’s current mechanical condition.
